Brain Cooling Technique for Newborns

Reducing the Effects of a Brain Injury

A new technique is being used in hospitals on newborns called brain cooling. When there are indications that a brain injury has occurred during the birth process, a special water cooled cap or blanket is placed on the newborn to reduce the body temperature by a few degrees. This process is called therapeutic hypothermia and is administered for three days. A brain injury can be caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain and in cooling the baby's body temperature, it reduces the brain's need for oxygen and lessens the severity of an injury. It allows the body to try to repair itself.

Cerebral palsy is a common result of lack of oxygen to a newborn's brain. This technique has shown success in reducing the impact of a deprivation of oxygen. It is critical that brain cooling begins within 6 hours of birth. Medical malpractice can not only cause your child to suffer a birth injury, but can also be demonstrated in neglecting to treat your baby with a technique such as brain cooling, should the need arise. To answer any questions that you may have concerning the legal aspect of your baby's injury, consult with a California birth injury lawyer without delay.
