Shoulder Dystocia Birth Injury

Birth Injuries During Delivery

Dystocia is a term that means difficult delivery. When shoulder dystocia occurs, the baby's shoulder becomes stuck behind the mother's pelvic bone and if not taken care of correctly, can lead to a brachial plexus injury such as Erb's Palsy or a brain injury ( asphyxia or hypoxia) due to lack of oxygen or blood flow. A brain injury can result in developmental delays, mental retardation or cerebral palsy. Your newborn may suffer from a broken arm or collarbone or in severe cases, a wrongful death may occur.

A mother may also be injured during the delivery. Complications include heavy bleeding, tearing of the cervix, vagina, rectum or uterus and bruising of the bladder. There are a number of known reasons why shoulder dystocia occurs which your medical provider should be aware of. Delivering a very large baby or the mother having a small pelvic opening are common causes of this condition. If your doctor does not take effective action to prevent shoulder dystocia from causing a birth injury or neglects to assess the risk factors of your individual circumstances, they may be guilty of medical malpractice. Consult with a knowledgeable California birth injury lawyer if you have any question as to whether medical malpractice caused your newborn undue suffering.
