Hospital maternity ward shutdown due to medical errors

A recent story out of our nation’s capital exposes the horrific care obstetrics patients received at a Washington D.C. hospital, leading to the shutdown of the maternity ward. Mistakes were made involving several mothers and their babies including hospital staff’s failure to take critical steps to prevent the transmission of HIV from an infected mother to her newborn, and the failure to properly monitor and treat a high risk pregnant woman who showed signs of distress and had a history of potentially fatal blood-pressure problems.

The occurrence of preventable medical errors and mistakes still plagues our healthcare system. Further, statistics reveal that it is often a small percentage of doctors who are responsible for these errors, and that errors and mistakes may be more common in certain hospitals than in others. The non-profit group Leapfrog recently published its list of most dangerous hospitals, with the worst including:

  • Downey Regional Medical Center
  • Victory Valley Global Medical Center
  • El Centro Regional Medical Center
  • Memorial Hospital of GardenaPioneers Memorial Healthcare District
